Grieving through the Holidays: A Compassionate Circle

Thursday, November 14, 2019, 6:30 – 8:30 pm Members Free/ Member Guests $10/ Nonmembers $15

Holidays! It takes a lot of effort to be cheerful when we are feeling sad, and the presence of grief roars or whispers. How will we manage our emotions? The compassionate circle is for anyone who is anxious or worried about how to move through the holiday season when feelings of loss are present.

In our circle we will:

  • Honor old traditions and explore what is meaningful now

  • Give ourselves permission to experiment with approaching the holidays differently

  • Discover quick and effective tools to release emotion to prevent feeling overwhelmed

Grieving is hard and the holidays can sometimes feel less of a celebration and more of an emotional maneuver. In our time together, we will learn some potent methods to be present in our grief, including permission to walk away when we need to. We welcome you into the supportive sanctuary of the compassionate circle.

Creative Strategies for Grief A Five Week Workshop Series

Thursday evenings, 6:00 - 8:00 1/30/20, 2/6/20, 2/13,20, 2/20/20, 2/27/28

Using the theme set forth in Claudia Coenen’s book, Shattered by Grief: Picking up the pieces to become WHOLE again, this 5-part workshop will review current grief counseling models, deliver creative methods to understand the grieving process, and strategies to help the bereaved.

Many of the creative activities can be used by patients on the end of life spectrum. Each session will include one or more focused methodology, including creative process sheets, drawing, collage, and movement. Participants will also be guided through relaxation techniques that are designed to support those in grief and have the opportunity to experience how creative processes can be beneficial in grief counseling. In order to integrate the teachings, small/large experiential group work will be incorporated into the sessions.

Each class will begin with an opening circle and end with a closing circle, including a poem or a somatic exercise. Creative worksheets, Karuna Cards, and other experiential activities from Claudia’s two books will be used.
